Winter Curb Appeal Tips & Tricks

Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you should ignore the curb appeal of your exterior. An inviting home will not only make you feel better about pulling into the drive, it can also pay off with a signed contract if you’re trying to sell. Here are some tips to keep in mind.

  • Tidy up the yard. While the grass may have browned, even brown grass looks better when it’s neat. Make sure to do a final short cut once the grass growth slows (this prevents the development of snow mold caused by matted grass), edge along sidewalks and flower beds, and periodically rake up leaves and debris that fall on the lawn.
  • Clear out gutters. Once leaves have fallen from the trees, don’t forget to clean out your gutters. Not only do clean gutters look more appealing, they also prevent the headaches and potential damage to your home that can result from clogged gutters.
  • Add a fresh coat of paint. Bare trees and shrubbery make the exterior of your home more apparent than in the spring and summer. If the paint on siding, trim and doors needs to be refreshed, take advantage of an above-freezing winter day to get the job done. Here’s what to consider before painting your siding.
  • Invest in cold-tolerant plants. Evergreens are a popular choice for winter color, and there are quite a few other options that thrive in cooler weather. To enjoy color as long as possible, turn to cold-tolerant plants such as pansies and witch hazel, and foliage plants like flowering kale, ornamental cabbage and mustard for interesting texture and color.
